Multimedia artist Simon Van Parys (°1986) graduated in 2010 with a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Arts (KASK) in Ghent (BE). In addition to his studio in Ghent, where his professional practice is based, he continues to expand his artistic horizons with international collaborations from London to Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Tehran, and Hong Kong. Each new environment has a defining influence on his output. His practice is influenced by large cranes, container terminals, automobiles, and fighter jets. In short: robust futuristic machines with body. The handmade sculptures—composed of assemblages, advanced plastics, and utilizing 3-D technology—appear as almost extraterrestrial creations. His sculptural work is complemented by various media such as painting, photography, and digital drawings, as well as sound, which add an extra dimension to this sensory experience. His work is a conversation between the present and the future, whether utopian or dystopian, depending on the viewer's own worldview.
